Week 3: Diet – Getting The Balance Right For Your Pet

It’s week 3 of National Pet Month and we turn our attention to diet – one of the five key welfare needs for our pets.

When it comes to feeding our animal companions, it’s not just about what we give them, but whether we’re getting the balance right. This balance of nutrients plays a vital role in supporting their overall health, energy and wellbeing each day. It’s something that sits at the heart of responsible pet ownership, even if it can sometimes feel a little confusing to navigate.

This is where guidance from organisations like UK Pet Food can be really helpful. They explain how a healthy diet is about providing the correct mix of proteins, fats, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals, all tailored to your pet’s individual needs. It’s this balance that helps support everything from growth and development to long-term health.

The age, breed, size and lifestyle of our pets all influence what diet suits them best. A growing puppy will have very different nutritional needs to an older dog, just like a kitten will require a different diet to a senior cat. All our pets require different support at various life stages.

Then there’s the temptation of sharing those human food scraps from the table, especially when our much loved pet gives us that look. As tempting as it may be, it’s important to remember that  our pets’ nutritional needs are not the same as our own, so what works for us is not suitable for them. A complete and balanced diet tailored to your pet’s needs is what will give them the very best chance to live a long, happy and healthy life.

With so many food options available, it’s no surprise that feeding choices can feel overwhelming at times. What matters most is that your pet’s nutritional needs are met, so look out for loads of advice and tips on this in the coming week, as we explore everything from understanding food labels and portion sizes to thinking about life stages, treats and the role diet plays in our pet’s overall wellbeing.

We’ll also be talking to Battersea about the No Empty Bowls Campaign, doing some myth busting around small animal and dog and cat diets, and sharing more of your wonderful #PetPawsitivity stories and pics.

Tell us about your animal companion and post a pic or short video of them on our social channels during #NationalPetMonth, sharing what you love about them. Or send an email to asha@turquoisetiger.co.uk and find out how easy it is to get involved in this year’s campaign on our website.
