What’s Changed For Your Pet?
Their routine’s shifted, you’re not there and they may be staying somewhere new or being cared for by someone different.
What can help your pet adjust?
• Choose the right care for your pet.
• As PDSA advises, if your pet can’t travel with you, it’s important to arrange suitable care, which might include friends or family, professional pet sitters, boarding kennels or catteries or home-from-home boarding.
• Organise holiday care well in advance to give you time to budget and check out all your options.
• Visit kennels or catteries before booking, so you can check out the accommodation, environment and staff experience, says the National Animal Welfare Trust. Check out their advice.
Every pet is different in how they adapt to change, so take some time considering the best option for them.
• If possible, keep things familiar.
Familiar surroundings, smells and routines can all help your animal companion feel calmer, so having those toys, blankets, beds and play items really can help them to settle in.
• If someone new will be looking after your pet, allowing your animal companion to meet them beforehand can help your pet feel more comfortable when you’re away.
• Leave clear care instructions for your pet carer, including details of feeding routines, walking schedules, favourite toys and medication.
• Ensure your pet’s nutritional needs are met by providing clear instructions on the type of food and appropriate portion sizes for their age, weight, etc, including the occasional treat. Be careful not to encourage over feeding.
• Provide any pet carer with full contact details for your vet, pet insurance provider and for you while you’re away, in case of emergencies.
By taking some of these simple actions, it means you can enjoy your time away, knowing your pet is safe and secure until you’re back home together again.
