National Pet Month is underway, and in week 1 we’ll be shining a spotlight on the first of our five key welfare needs: companionship.
Animals and people are social creatures and the bonds we form with each other are central to our wellbeing – both our physical and emotional health.
For many of us, the companionship we experience with our pets is one of the greatest joys of sharing our lives with animals.
It’s why we love hearing about the beautiful bonds you have with your pets when you share your #PetPawsitivity stories with us.
As pet owners, life feels better with animals around and growing scientific evidence supports this. Research highlighted by UK Pet Food shows that living with companion animals can have so many positive mental and physical benefits, helping to reduce stress and strengthen social connections.
Even the smallest moments of interaction between us and our animal can have an impact. The gentle stroke of a canine companion on a tough day or the relaxing sound of your cat’s purr, can be all that’s needed to lift our mood.
Studies have shown that spending time with animals can lower levels of cortisol, the body’s main stress hormone, while increasing oxytocin, often referred to as the “bonding hormone”.
Pets can also encourage healthier lifestyles. Dog owners are more likely to meet recommended exercise levels because of those regular walks, while everyday routines such as feeding, grooming and playtime can bring structure and purpose to our daily lives.
For some of us, companionship is particularly important. Pets can provide comfort during stressful periods, reduce feelings of loneliness and offer a steady, reassuring presence in our homes.
Then there’s the amazing work of support animals across the UK, whose intelligence, training and loyalty enables their humans to live as rich and fulfilling lives as possible.
Of course, companionship is not just something pets give to us, it is something they need too.
Responsible pet ownership means recognising that many animals depend on social interaction to thrive. That may mean living with other compatible animals, spending time with their human family and having regular opportunities for play, engagement and mental stimulation.
This week we want to celebrate and highlight the importance of companionship for our pets and for us; to share the countless ways the human-animal bond is as strong as ever.
During Companionship Week, we’d love you to celebrate that bond with us by sharing your #PetPawsitivity stories.
Tell us about the pet who makes your life brighter. What do they do that always makes you smile? What makes them such a great companion?
Send us an email with your words, pics and short video clips, find out how to get involved here and see how easy it is.
