About us
A UK-wide campaign bringing together organisations, experts and pet owners to share trusted advice and promote responsible pet care.

Each year, during April and early May, we bring together animal welfare charities, professional bodies, pet businesses, educators, community groups and pet lovers to share trusted information and practical advice about caring for pets.
What we aim to achieve
- Promote responsible pet ownership
- Make people aware of the mutual benefits of living with pets
- Increase public awareness of the role of pet care specialists
- Raise awareness of the value of working with companion animals
- Encourage fundraising for UK pet welfare charities and organisations
What responsible pet ownership means
Responsible pet ownership means meeting a pet’s needs throughout their life, from choosing the right pet to providing ongoing care, attention and support.
The messages shared during National Pet Month are guided by the Five Welfare Needs, which are set out in UK law and form the foundation of good pet care. They ensure pets can live healthy, comfortable and fulfilling lives.
What are the welfare needs?

Companionship
Appropriate companionship – ensuring pets have the right level of social contact – whether with people, other animals, or the appropriate time alone.

Behaviour
The ability to behave normally – allowing pets to express natural behaviours through exercise, play, enrichment and mental stimulation.

Diet
A suitable diet – feeding a balanced, appropriate diet and ensuring pets always have access to fresh water.

Environment
A suitable environment – providing a safe, comfortable place to live, with appropriate space, shelter and opportunities to rest and feel secure.

Health
Protection from pain, suffering, injury and disease – looking after pets’ physical and mental health through responsible breeding, preventive care, regular veterinary attention and forward planning.
